March 2019 Meeting and Tournament:

Our March meeting will be on Thursday, March 14, 2019 at 7:00pm at Pok-e-Jo’s Smokehouse on Parmer Lane. Our March tournament will be on Saturday, March 16, 2019. Come early to enjoy the fellowship and some great BBQ.

Club News:

We will draw partners this month for the May travel tournament to Choke Canyon Reservoir. If you cannot attend the meeting this month and plan to fish the travel tournament, please let me know whether you want to leave on Thursday or Friday and whether you plan to be a rigger or non-rigger. This will help ensure everyone is paired up this month.

Don’t forget that April 27th, 2019, is the Amputee fishing event at Lake Bastrop. We need riggers and non-riggers to participate in this event to ensure all the amputees have a great time. We fish until noon and share a great lunch together that is provided by the families of the amputees. A sign-up sheet will be passed around at the upcoming meeting so we can begin to make plans for this event.

C.A.S.T. for Kids is planned for May 4th and riggers and non-riggers can go online to register as a boat captain or co-captain. The website is www.castforkids.org. Click on the tab for “Find an Event”. When you find the Lake Bastrop event, click on “Register as a Boat Captain”. Non-riggers should register as a co-captain. I encourage all of you to participate in a very organized and enjoyable event that benefits some very special kids.

Art Cruser decided to give the certificate for a guided fishing trip with Mike Hastings back to the club because he couldn’t go with his grandson before this summer. There will be another raffle at the upcoming meeting and the money will go to Bob and Sherry Smith so they can provide lunch for the school kids they are teaching in Kenya.

Couples Club:

The first Couples Club event of the year was held on Lake Bastrop and 7 couples participated on a cold day. Gene and Tammy Franz won the tournament with 5 fish that weighed 14.32 pounds. Dan and Diane Wessman were the very close second place team with 5 fish weighing 14.27 pounds. Tammy Franz and Katy Duda tied for big bass with a 19.5” bass that weighed 4.06 pounds. The Couples Club will have their next tournament on April 6th, 2019.

Fishing Reports:

March should be a great month for fishing although the weather is seems to change every week. The Retiree Club fished Decker Lake last Thursday. The water temperature was between 51 degrees and 54 degrees.  Fish were caught shallow along the reed lines. They were caught in about 10 feet of water on a Carolina rig and on the dam using a crankbait or soft plastic. There were 9 teams and one person on each team caught a limit of fish. Plan to share your fishing reports with everyone at the upcoming meeting. I will see you at the meeting next Thursday evening.

Tournament Results:

Since we voted to cancel the January 19th tournament due to high winds, there are no tournament results.

Tournament Standings for 2019: (coming next month).

February 2019 Meeting and Tournament:

Our February meeting will be on Wednesday, February 13, 2019 at 7:00pm at Pok-e-Jo’s Smokehouse on Parmer Lane. Our February tournament will be on Saturday, February 16, 2019. Come enjoy the fellowship and some great BBQ.

Club News:

During our January club meeting, a motion was made to change the club constitution to include the two (2) lake rule unless there were extenuating circumstances justifying ignoring the two lake rule. The two lake rule simply means the club will not fish a lake more than twice during the calendar year. The rule was initially put in place to increase the number of lakes the club fished during the calendar year. If this motion passes, it will become a tournament rule rather than a guideline whenever the issue arises during a club meeting. Section IV.7 of the club bylaws dealing with club tournaments, states “Lake selection, starting time of tournament, and the time and place of the weigh-in will be decided at the monthly meeting. No pre-fishing is allowed during the 8 hours preceding the official starting time of a club tournament.” If this motion passes, I suggest adding the following to section IV.7 of the club bylaws: “The club will not fish any lake more than twice during a calendar year unless there are extenuating circumstances justifying doing so.” We will vote on this motion during the upcoming meeting.

During the January meeting, we also decided to have a Spring travel tournament this year and Choke Canyon was suggested. Be prepared to pick a lake and a month for our spring travel tournament at the upcoming meeting. I have contacted Choke Canyon Lodge and tentatively reserved 10 rooms for March 14th and 15th if we decide to go in March. There are also rooms available if we decide to go to Choke Canyon Reservoir in April.

Don’t forget the raffle for the guided fishing trip for two with Mike Hastings valued at $295.00. Money raised from this raffle will help support the missionary activities of Bob and Sherry Smith by helping pay for lunches for children attending school in Kenya. Raffle tickets will cost $20 each.

If you missed the January meeting and haven’t paid your annual dues, please bring your payment to the upcoming meeting so I can send everyone an updated club roster.

Fishing Reports:

Fishing has been slow recently. The Retiree Club fished Lake Bastrop on February 6th and the winning team, Don Haluzan and Gary Burnham, caught 10 fish weighing over 22 pounds. Many club members caught fish using the Ned rig that day. Plan to share your fishing reports with everyone at the upcoming club meeting. I will see you at the meeting Wednesday evening.

Club News:

Happy New Year! Did you set any fishing goals for 2019? Perhaps you want to master fishing the Ned Rig or make it into the Top Ten in the club. I suggest the Three P’s – Planning, Preparation, and Participation. The most important one of the three is participation. I could write a book on the other two P’s. Maybe planning and preparation should be topics for presentations by some of our successful club members during the next few months.

I am attaching a Member Information Form that you should complete and bring to the upcoming meeting. This form provides personal contact information for the club roster and a record of annual dues and other fees that are being paid by members. I will have some hard copies at the upcoming club meeting for those that may need one.

Fishing Reports:

Bring your fishing reports to the upcoming meeting and share them with everyone. The weather forecast is not looking very good for this coming Saturday. I will see you at the meeting Thursday evening.

Roger Growden Memorial Fishing Tournament

September 10th, 2018 · No Comments · Outreach Activities

The second annual Roger Growden Memorial Fishing Tournament for Heroes Night Out will be held on October 13th, 2018 at Lake Bastrop North Shore Park. The boats will load up participants at 7:00 am and will return at noon. There will be a meal served at the pavilion next to the swim area for all participants, their family members, and the members of the Austin Christian Bass Club who provided the boats and the meal for the event. Those members of the Heroes Night Out organization who want to go fishing must sign up two weeks prior to the event so that Austin Christian Bass Club will know how many boats we will need to take everyone who wants to fish out on the lake. The club will also need to know how many family members are coming so that we will know how much food to prepare. I have arranged with the LCRA to get a reduced entry fee for the park. Participants and family members over the age of 18 will only have to pay 2 dollars per person. Children under the age of 18 are free. To get to the park, go out on 290 through Elgin. Just as you are leaving Elgin, turn right on 95 toward Bastrop. Go 13 miles on 95 until you come to FM 1441 and turn left. There is a Valero station on the corner and a traffic light where 1441 meets 95. Go 2 miles until you see the sign for Lake Bastrop North Shore and turn right on the next road. Proceed through the gate. The boat ramp is straight ahead. There are brown restrooms on the left and a parking lot next to the restrooms. Park in the parking lot and there is a sidewalk down to the pavilion. Next to the pavilion is a swimming beach and floating waterslides, so family members can come early and go swimming if the air and water temperatures are warm enough. If you have any questions about the event, you may contact me on my cell phone at 512-589-5589. You may also contact me at my e-mail, artcruser@gail.com.
