Summer is Here:

During every winter fishing trip when the mercury drops below freezing, we take precautions to ensure a safe and enjoyable fishing trip. Now that it is getting hot, don’t forget to take precautions that will allow you to deal with the heat. Keep hydrated. There is no such thing as drinking too much water during the heat of the day. Use some water to wet your clothing and let evaporation help keep you cool. Don’t forget the importance of sun screen and sun glasses. Forget either of these items and a day on the water during the summer can turn into a painful experience. During the past year, the one thing that I didn’t usually carry in my boat was headache medication. I was asked several times if I had any available. I do now. These simple precautions will help ensure every fishing trip is fun in spite of the hot weather that is here to stay for awhile.

Couples Tournament Results:

On June 2, 2007, the ACBC Couples Club held its final tournament of the spring session on Lake LBJ. Five teams participated and a total of 18 bass were reported for a total weight of 27.02 pounds. Jim and Nita Pollard took first place with 5 fish weighing 8.89 pounds. Ken and Melba Haulotte were second with 5 fish weighing 5.62 pounds. Ron Roberts had big fish of the tournament at 19”. All the fish were caught on soft plastics primarily on the lower end of the lake. The water on Lake LBJ was murky and fishing was tough for several teams. The boat traffic was horrendous. The Couples Club started their day with breakfast at the Blue Bonnet Café and finished up with weigh-in at the same place, along with what seemed like 500 bikers. The Couples Club will take a break until this fall when they will fish September, October, and November. The fall schedule will be published soon. The following table reflects the current standings for the ACBC Couples Club:

Team No. Fish Weight Total Weight for Year Current Standings

Nita and Jim 5 8.89 49.42 1

Melba and Ken 5 5.62 13.40 4

Phyllis and Gib 4 4.63 26.29 2

Peggy and Bob 3 4.13 22.50 3

Suzanna and Ron 1 3.75 13.26 5

Patsy and Art 08.50 6

Fishing Report:

During the past two weeks, I have fished Lake LBJ with Jim Pollard, Stillhouse Hollow with Mike Wiles, and Lake Travis with Gary Burnham, Dale White, and Jim Pollard. Fish can be caught at Lake LBJ and Travis fairly easy if you go at the right time of day, which is night time. Although Lake LBJ was somewhat murky when Jim and I fished it two weeks ago, it has probably cleared up to some extent because the heavy rains have stopped during the last week. The best time to go is very early in the morning and plan on getting off the water around noon. Stillhouse Hollow Lake is flooded and the water level is still around 20’ above full. It was 8’ above full when Mike and I fished it and we only caught a few fish. The water was really off color until you got near the dam. Lake Travis really looks great now that it is full, but the fish have not moved up shallow yet. Fishing around all the flooded bushes/trees has only produced a few fish. The best fishing is at night around well lighted docks in 10 to 20’ of water. Biggest bass I caught this past week was around 21” (I forgot to actually measure her) and the average number caught per trip was probably 15 or more. See you all at the meeting next Thursday and bring a fishing report or a friend.
