Don’t forget the club meeting is next Thursday, July 17th, and I hope everyone is ready for a night tournament so we can avoid the heat and the boat traffic.
See you next Thursday,
Darryl
Tournament Overview:
Our June tournament at Lake Bastrop was great for some teams and challenging for others. Only nine of twenty-four participants caught a limit of 5 fish. Carlton Yarbrough and Brian Kitchen took first place with 36.21 pounds. Jim Pollard and Brooks Griffith took second place with 26.98 pounds and Vince Martin and his guest, Kevin Keller, took third place with 25.77 pounds. Brooks Griffith caught the biggest bass at 22” and Tom Clark had the largest stringer; 5 fish totaling 21.63 pounds.
Top Ten Standings for 2008:
| Tom Clark- 84.02 pounds | Darryl Smith- 69.71 pounds |
| Vince Martin- 77.51 pounds | Brooks Griffith- 60.80 pounds |
| Mike Wiles- 76.12 pounds | David McClung- 58.51 pounds |
| John Kirkland- 74.16 pounds | Carlton Yarbrough- 58.32 pounds |
| Jim Pollard- 73.87 pounds | Gary Burnham- 53.61 pounds |
Art Cruser, T.V. Minner, Dale White, and Darryl Smith all tied for Big Bass of the 2nd Quarter. Each person caught a 25” bass during the quarter. I am aware of a 24” bass being caught in early July by a member, so the bar has been set pretty high for the 3rd Quarter.
July Meeting and Tournament:
Our next meeting will be Thursday, July 17th, at 7:00 pm. Our July tournament will be on Saturday, July 19, 2008. Vince Martin and Tom McVan have volunteered to bring refreshments to the next meeting.
Annual Garage Sale:
Thanks to the hard work of Brian Kitchen and other members who donated items for the garage sale or who volunteered to help out on the day of the garage sale, it was a big success. At the end of the day when the cash was counted, the proceeds totaled over $540.00 and this doesn’t include the sale of certain items that Brian will sell on Ebay or Craigslist to get more money than someone would pay at a garage sale. The final total may be closer to $750.00.
TABC Top 8 Tournament:
TABC has announced that the TABC Top 8 Tournament will be held the last weekend in September, 9/27 & 9/28, on Lake Belton and Stillhouse Hollow Lake. The year is half over so it is a good time to start thinking about when and where we want to go for our annual travel tournament.
Fishing Report:
I have only fished in the morning twice since our last tournament on Bastrop. The first day I did this, I was fishing with Mike Wiles on Lake Bastrop using a frog to get some revenge since many of us didn’t have much luck during the last tournament on Lake Bastrop throwing a frog. Once again, the fish humbled us both, but an amazing thing happened.
Can you believe that? This is one of 3 different frogs that tried to eat my Scum Frog. My best fishing has been at night on Lake Travis and Lake LBJ. It’s hard to beat fishing at night when the temperature is nice, there is no boat traffic, and almost any good dock light or underwater light might hold fish. Several people have fished Lake Austin at night, but the number of fish caught has been low. The bite seems to be good before dark and just after dark, but not all night long. I think it may have something to do with current, or the lack of it, because LCRA often stops releasing water late at night. I hope to see all of you next Thursday at the meeting.>((((o>
