Club History

Introduction

Doug Hullum, Felix Dailey, Gene Archer, Roger Growden, and T.V. Minner were the organizers of the Allandale Bass Club, the precursor to the Austin Christian Bass Club. The Allandale Bass Club stared in 1976 with 21 members and was the first Christian bass club in the state, and perhaps the United States, according to Gene Archer. In March 1980, the Austin Christian Bass Club was born to spread beyond the church walls to all Christian bass fisherman in the Austin area.

Current members who were charter members at the first meeting in March, 1980, were Roger Growden, T.V. Minner, and Tom Clark. Gene Archer, a charter member, no longer active, was made a lifetime honorary member in 2002 because of his longstanding membership and service to the Club.

The first roster had 23 members and the first tournament was on Lake Buchanen with 13 teams. The dues were $8.00 per year. The first few years we brought fish in and had an actual weith-in with our club scales. ACBC has always had a 5 fish per man limit, and a 12-inch minimum. In 1986 when the minimum length was changed to 14 inches, we started going to “paper” tournaments with catch and release to allow the recording of 12 to 14 inch fish. We kept track of our individual catches in total ounces until 1985 when we started tracking it in pounds and ounces. Since 1986 we keep track in pounds and tenths of pounds according to the length/weight chart devised by Ralph Manns.

The Club met at Allandale Baptist Church on Northland Dr. from 1980 to 1984. They met at First Evanglical Free Church at 45th and Red River from 1984 to 1993. In 1993, the Club moved to our current location at Hillcrest Baptist Church on Steck Ave. We generally fish the third Saturday of each month and meet at 7:00 PM on the Thursday before. There will be 2 or 3 exceptions to this each year due to holidays.
